About Robert
Robert Reddrick is an award-winning music director, drummer, and arranger, and one of the most respected musical voices in Chicago theater. As Resident Musical Director of the Black Ensemble Theater, he leads the live band that gives the company its signature sound — drumming and directing through soul revues, biographical musicals, and world premieres.
He leads from the drum kit rather than a podium — a drummer first, with the kind of deep, unhurried pocket that lets singers lean back and horn sections snap into place. Soul, gospel, blues, funk, or a full Broadway chart: three decades on Chicago bandstands have given him the vocabulary for all of it.
A former student at Columbia College Chicago, Robert is a seven-time recipient of the Black Theater Alliance Award and a seven-time Jeff Award nominee for musical direction. He also performs with his own band, The R2Project, and stays devoted to mentoring young musicians.
